When the story of a Somali veterinarian who lost his leg in civil unrest was published by the VIN News Service, the VIN community expressed a common goal of wanting to help their colleague get a new prosthetic leg. While serving as local director for the Switzerland-based Veterinarians Without Borders, veterinarian Ali Nur Mohamed miraculously survived a horrific attack by the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Ali fled with his family to Switzerland, where he made a meager living selling newspapers on the street.

The VIN Foundation reviewed the situation and found an alliance with its mission and decided to spearhead the effort by helping raise funds through its established giving process, with 100% of the donations going directly to help Dr. Nur.

Through extensive research, and back and forth conversations with Dr. Nur’s doctors, the Dr. Nur Fund was set up to acquire and fit the appropriate type of prosthetic leg for a total price of $25,000.

Due to the generosity of the VIN community, individual donors, and a generous matching grant, all the funds have been raised and we are in the process of getting Dr. Nur his new leg!
