About Dr. Sophia Yin

Ever since she was a child, Sophia wanted to be a veterinarian. In 1993, her lifelong dream came true when she graduated veterinary school from UC Davis.

During this time, she was already making a positive impact on the veterinary profession. While in her 3rd year of veterinary school, she wrote her first version of the Small Animal Veterinary Nerdbook as her portable notes guidebook. This helpful resource would go on for multiple editions and helping over 40,000 veterinary colleagues.

Once out in private practice, she quickly realized that more pets were euthanized due to behavior problems than medical ones. She went back to school to study animal behavior, and earned her Master’s in Animal Science in 2001 from UC Davis where she studied vocal communication in dogs and worked on behavior modification in horses, giraffes, ostriches, and chickens. During this time she was also the award-winning pet columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Upon receiving her degree focused on animal behavior, Dr. Yin served for five years as a lecturer in the UC Davis Animal Science Department.

This training revealed what she saw as the key to behavior modification: helping animals feel safe. From that insight, Dr. Yin created an entirely new approach. She developed practical techniques for gentler handling and restraint, calmer environments, reading pets’ emotional states, and individual handling plans for every patient. She brought it all together, creating the Low Stress Handling® method.

Today, low-stress and fear-reducing handling is everywhere in veterinary medicine, and many programs have adopted, adapted, or rebranded these ideas. But the movement began with Dr. Yin. She was the one who first put these principles into practice, taught them, and changed how the profession cares for animals.

On Sept. 28, 2014, Dr. Yin passed away. News of her death elicited an outpouring of sorrow in veterinary circles and expressions of profound admiration for Dr. Yin, a superstar in the animal-behavior arena. Whether they knew her personally or only knew of her, veterinarians around the world have said Dr. Yin strongly influenced their practice.
